Black(s)town
26 June - 29 August 2009
The Black(s)town exhibition explores the origins of Blacktown through its historical and contemporary Aboriginal identities. Blacktown, derived from the 'Black's Town', is a name by which the area became known in the early 1800s due to a growing settlement of Aboriginal people whilst under colonial administration.
Inspired and informed by the stories of the original Blacks' Town settlement, this exhibition acknowledges and celebrates Aboriginal heritage and contemporary practices within Blacktown. It features new paintings and installation art by key Aboriginal artists from Western Sydney whose works explore Aboriginal identity and spirituality, as well as a fundamental connection to the region.
The exhibition features new work by artists Robyn Caughlan, Danny Eastwood, Jamie Eastwood, Adam Hill, Kayelene Slater, Jake Soewardie, Leanne Tobin, Zona Wilkinson and Jason Wing.
Public programming for the exhibition will include educational workshops by exhibiting Aboriginal artists, guest lectures and a film screening.
The exhibition is part of the Black(s)town initiative, a project dedicated to the long term development and recognition of local Aboriginal cultures, communities and arts practices.
