Blacktown's Youth get ARTY

The young people of Blacktown City are getting their paints, pencils and crayons ready as they transform their creative ideas into art for Blacktown City's largest annual art prize, the 2009 Blacktown City Art Exhibition.

Always a delightful part of the art prize, the Children's and Young Artists section features work by 5 - 15 year olds who live or attend schools within the Blacktown City region.

"The creativity of Blacktown's young people is outstanding", said Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles.

"Each year imaginative works are entered that explore important environmental issues in very thoughtful ways"

The Children and Young Artists section is environmentally themed and is sponsored by Blacktown City Council's Sustainable Living Directorate. The 2009 theme of "Consuming" is inspiring Blacktown's young artists to think about how we consume resources in the way we live, work and play. Colourful artworks exploring recycling, transport and water usage issues are expected.

Entry to this section is free and is limited to one entry per child/young artist. Artworks and entry forms for the Children and Young Artists section are due 10am - 5pm, Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September 2009. Entry forms are available from Blacktown Arts Centre, Council's Information Centre and can be downloaded at www.artscentre.blacktown.nsw.gov.au

The 2009 Blacktown City Art Exhibition will be held at Blacktown Arts Centre, 78 Flushcombe Rd, from 19 September - 17 October 2009. Admission is free.

The Blacktown City Art Exhibition is increasingly a family affair with many children and parents exhibiting side-by-side.

In 2008 sisters Elinor and Brigitte from Seven Hills were both children's prize winners, whilst their mother Genevieve was a sculpture finalist in the main prize.

Also in 2008, Imojjen aged 7 from Toongabbie received a highly commended for her unique paper tree sculpture, whilst mother Rebecca was a sculpture finalist.
