LIGHT & SHADOW Catherine O'Donnell
14 April - 13 June
.
Catherine O'Donnell's large-scale charcoal drawings use light and shadow to spotlight the often overlooked in our everyday spaces. For the Light and Shadow exhibition, O'Donnell has produced a new series of works depicting the main streets and laneways of Blacktown's central shopping district plunged into the darkness of night.
.
Minimal light sources, from street lamp posts and interior shop lights, illuminate the repetitive urban patterns of brick work, street pavers and roller shutter doors. Within these spaces layers of random graffiti and a multitude of street and shop signage suggest an ever-changing urban narrative.
.
Capturing the streets of Blacktown during the abandoned hours of night, O'Donnell's charcoal drawings expose a beauty that is often lost during the brightness and activity of day.
.
Teacher's Viewing and Artist's Talk
You are invited to a teacher's preview and artist's talk on Thursday 4th June 2009 at either 4:00 or 5:00 pm as part of the current exhibition 'Light & Shadows' by local artist Catherine O'Donnell.
Catherine O'Donnell's work for the exhibition was created during a one year residency with Blacktown Arts Centre. Her meticulously executed large scale charcoal drawings render familiar locations motionless and use light sources - both artificial and natural - to spotlight often overlooked quotidian objects and architectural forms.
As a visitor to the exhibition has commented, it is "unbelievable that these shadows & reflections can be made with charcoal".
The afternoon is an opportunity for teachers to speak to the artist, view the exhibition, receive classroom resources and meet other teachers in an informal and relaxed setting.
RSVP to Miguel Olmo, Audience Development and Community Engagement Officer on 9839 6247 by Tuesday 2nd June.
