SMALL TREASURES

14 April - 13 June

Maori culture's rich history is recorded in its dance, ritual, chants, weaving, carving, tattoo and the many creative forms collectively known as 'Maori Art'. The Small Treasures exhibition showcases recent work by leading contemporary Maori artists in the fields of ceramics, weaving and sculpture.

In particular, the exhibition features 'kete', Maori woven bags and 'hei tiki', ornamental pendants carved from the iconic green stone 'pounamu'. These are both strong and vigorous art forms practiced throughout Maoridom that are extending the boundaries of traditional Maori art forms.

Small Treasures marks the 25th anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Blacktown City and Porirua City, which is situated on the New Zealand coastline.

The exhibition was developed by Pataka Museum, Porirua and Toi Maori Aotearoa, Maori Arts New Zealand.
